Dola and Glesmann Take Gold in Shootout Win

GDI Prairies would like to notice the '97 born Manitoba Moose spring team who recently won a tournament this past weekend in Duluth.

Longtime GDI goaltenders, Hayden Dola and Andrew Glesmann, helped defend the net for the Moose. Hayden Dola backstopped the team in the championship final and was stellar in net to hold on for a 3-2 shootout win to capture the gold.

Both goaltenders will head into their second year of Bantam hockey this winter, and look to take the next step in their development as their draft year approaches.

WHL Bantam Draft Wrap Up: 4 GDI Goalies Selected

Overall 4 GDI goalies were selected in this years Western Hockey League Bantam Draft.

Two goaltenders from GDI Prairies:

Zac Robidoux, Medicine Hat Tigers - 124 Overall and Ty Edmonds, Prince George Cougars - 186th Overall.

Two goaltenders from GDI Alberta:
Payton Lee, Vancouver Giants - 28th Overall and Derek Mazil, Edmonton Oil Kings - 68th Overall.

While the WHL Bantam Draft is the first opportunity for teams to select graduating Bantam players, it is not the last chance for a player to be listed or recruited by a WHL Club. After the Drafft is completed, all remaining Bantam players become eligible to be listed by WHL Clubs, and many will be added as spots become available on each WHL teams Protected Player List, or as player development improves at a higher level of hockey.

With this said, for the long list of goaltenders that dream to play at the Major Junior level, it is important that you stick to your training regimen. Don't sit back and relax!

All athletes have the capability of creating a perspective of how others view them. To progress and create future opportunities take into consideration: the actions that you show, the habits that you maintain, and the character that you represent on the ice.

Moodie & Bray Help Warriors Claim City Championship

It took just five games for the Winnipeg Warriors to claim the 2010/2011 City Midget AAA Championship. After trading wins in game one and two, the Warriors exploded offensively in games four and five, taking the games by scores of 5-0 and 11-1. Game five was much tighter but the Warriors held on to take the series with a 5-3 win.

GDI Prairies would like to congratulate both goaltenders, Alex Moodie and Nolan Bray
, for their success with the Warriors. Training consistantly throughout the year with GDI, both goaltenders had built up a wall of confidence that evidently helped them defend the net for their team.

League Finalists were the St. Vital Victorias Brock Klippenstein and Simon Berube. Bantam Champions were the Twins' Eric Borton and Andrew Derwin, along with league Finalists from the Railcats were Darien Krasnesky and Devin Lebleu.

Bantam 2 Goalies Compete in Low Scoring Final

The Bantam 2 Winnipeg Hawks and Warriors goaltenders have turned aside their fair share of rubber during the city finals.

With four games played, both goaltenders have shut the door allowing only 13 goals against. With the Hawks victories in the first two games with 3-2 wins, the next two games were consecutive shutouts. The Warriors Tyler Brown recorded his third shutout of the playoffs with a 2-0 victory in game 3. The fourth game of the series The Hawks goaltender Troy Martyniuk shut the door with a 1-0 win as he fought off numerous attempts through traffic.

Currently defending opposite end of the ice, Brown and Martyniuk will be paired up on the Wpg AAA Team White at the 2011 Directors Cup from the 25-27th of March (GDI Goalies Selected). Both goaltenders have been dedicated to their position and have attended GDI Prairies Summer Camps and 1v1 Sessions over the past two years. With strong technical skills and mental make-ups in net, both goalies display control within their position and also competitive mindsets that have taken them both to the top this year.

As the Hawks look to close out the series, game 5 of the best of 7 series takes place this Thursday . For more info and full results on the 2011 Bantam 2 Playoffs Click Here.

Hoger & Reed Take B1 Championship

GDI Goaltenders Zach Hoger and Reid Pennington have helped the Bantam 1 Winnipeg Hawks claim their second straight championship. Their 8-1 record helped them solidify a strong and quick playoff run.

They will head to Brandon, Manitoba March 18th to face off against the Brandon Wheat Kings, the Southeast Blizzard (Rural City AA Provincial Champion), and the Southwest Jets (Rural AA Provincial Champion) for the right to represent Manitoba at the upcoming Western Canadian Bantam Championships (WCBC) here in Winnipeg, Manitoba. With the win last night the Hawks have already earned a berth in the WCBC as the host team but can be named Provincial Champion and Team Manitoba if they come out on top after the Final Four. A Hawks win means that the Sharks (league finalists) would then become the host team at the WCBC.

Both Brandon Wheat Kings goaltenders, Reid Stallard and Tyler Gutenberg, also look to have strong outings in their run at the Provincials. With the Wheat Kings providing poor offensive strength this season both GDI goalies were peppered with an average of 40 plus shots per game. Stallard and Gutenberg have been persistent and have trained diligently on their off days which has helped them become stronger and push to success in the future.

Best of luck to all 4 goalies heading into Provincials!

Edmonds Called Up to Sharks

The City Midget - Winnipeg Sharks have called up 1996 born Ty Edmonds for the remaining rounds of the playoffs through the rest of March.

The Sharks faced off against Interlake on March 5th, the Monarchs on March 7th, and then Interlake for game four on March 10th. The 2010/2011 playoffs have placed the leagues top 6 teams into a round robin format that has the first place team out of the two pools proceed into a best of seven final.

Wiess Plays Big for Canadians

The battle between the St. James Canadians and the River East Marauders has been a spirited affair that has been taken into "extra innings" and has changed normality of the preliminary (best of three) round of the AA Minor Bantam playoffs.

GDI Prairies goaltender Tyler Wiess has found a way to hold the Canadians in it. One of the most competitive goaltenders at his age from Winnipeg, Wiess conquers opponents with his quick trigger response time and strong will to compete for every puck. With both teams evenly placed within the season standings with the Marauders in 4th and the Canadians in 5th, the series has seen each game being tightly matched.

Game one was owned by the Marauders with a 3-2 win. Two nights later, the game ended in a 2-2 decision after a scoreless overtime. Even with the Canadians holding a powerplay late in overtime the game ended without a final decision. Wiess held his own in the backend, shutting down many odd man rushes by the offensive minded River East players.

With the series still in the Marauders favor as they led 1-0 heading to the third game, the next night they weren't able to cap it off. The Canadians again found a way to battle back and complete a comeback with a 3-2 overtime victory. Coming up, the deciding game four will take place March 2nd. The winner of the series looks to meet the first place powerhouse, Fort Garry Twins.

Recap of Bantam Battle Between Monarchs and Warriors

GDI goaltenders went to battle last week as the Bantam 1 Winnipeg Monarchs faced off against the Warriors.

There is a saying that ‘the numbers don’t lie’ and that was the case for Wednesday night’s Bantam one matchup at Notre Dame Arena between the Warriors and Monarchs. The two teams are deadlocked in the standings as they battle to the bitter end for third place and the product on the ice reflected that fact. For the full game write-up Click Here.

Both goaltenders, Ty Edmonds (Warriors) and Evan Johnson (Monarchs), were selected to the All-Star game back in January and heading into the playoffs both sit near the top of all goaltenders in total goals against with a low 29 and 32.

With goaltending having the large impact on a teams success, each duo defending the net, Ty Edmonds/Max Hrechkosy and Evan Johnson/Ben Thorlakson, looks to be the reason towards their teams success.
