U18 Feature Goaltender: Samantha Goodbranson
GDI Prairies would like to recognize one of Manitoba's Top Female U-18 Prospect - Sam Goodbrandson.
Sam was most recently selected by Hockey Manitoba to attend the Program of Excellence Top 40 Camp at the end of May. Heading into the selection camp she brings a work ethic that goes above and beyond what many expect from a goaltender.
Key areas to note from her game include:
- Has the ability to maintain balance on her feet and react as she goes down
- Is active outside of the net communicating with her defense and transitioning the puck up ice
- Strong stick usage on all low shots
- Competes down low by using a spread that covers all low areas of the net, covering from the ice up
The Under-18 players who have been selected to attend the Program of Excellence (POE) TOP-40 Camp, held May 26-29, 2011 in Winnipeg. The players selected to attend the POE TOP-40 Camp have advanced from the pool of 102 players who competed at the POE Spring Tournament which was held April 15-17, 2011 at Max Bell Centre in Winnipeg.
The POE TOP-40 Camp is the third phase of the Program of Excellence which is the selection process for the U-18 Team Manitoba roster that will compete at the 2011 National U-18 Women's Championships in Saguenay, Que this November.

Brenna was most recently slected by Hockey Manitoba to attend the Program of Excellence Top 40 Camp at the end of May. Brenna brings a wall of confidence to her game, along with a intimidating presence as she presents a challenging frame that pressures her opposition.
Key areas to note from her game include:
- Absorbing and corralling pucks with her body
- Locking up holes by her posts and maintaining a compact position off of nearside attacks.
- Minimal post-save delay off of directed pucks from limbs
- Competitive mindset and will allow herself to get out a technical and tense style to battle for pucks in tight.

Pushka Recieves George Allard Scholarship
The 97th annual Hockey Manitoba Awards Luncheon was held on May 7th.
GDI goaltender, Amanda Pushka, was the recipient of one of Hockey Manitoba's highest scholarships. The George Allard Scholarship.
Amanda played for both the AA Female Assiniboine Park Rangers and the Oak Park Raiders Highschool Hockey team. Having a successful season, Amanda won the Provincial Championship for Oak Park Highschool and was a finalist with the Rangers.
Along with competing on the ice, she was also the captain for the high school volleyball team. She is a member of the Outdoors Club and traveled to Guatemala with the Mission Team. She has spent time volunteering at Winnipeg Harvest, Siloam Mission and the Habitat for Humanity Restore. She also coaches youth basketball and softball. Looking to the future, Amanda sets her sights on attending the University of Manitoba to study Civil Engineering.
Freeze Heads to St. Scholastica
Currently completing her last year playing Senior Prep at the Ontario Hockey Academy, Sheridan Friesen has committed with Division 2 St. Scholastica for her first year of College.
Leading to her on-ice preparation, Friesen has trained with GDI over the past five years.
GDI Prairies would like to recognize Sheridan's success and commitment to the position as she heads into her years playing with the St. Scholastica Saints.
Ryplanski Commits to Niagara University
This years Female U-18 Team Manitoba goaltender Abby Ryplanski is continuing to build up her resume in hockey. Most recently Ryplanski has commited to Niagara University.
This season Ryplanski compiled a 2.16 GAA and a .937 Save Percentage over 18 games played with Balmoral Hall.
GDI Prairies would like to recognize Abby for both having a very successful season and for committing to Niagara University, furthering her future career with hockey.

Team Manitoba finishes CWG with a shootout win
HALIFAX, NS – Team Manitoba fell behind 1-0 in the period to a big and physical British Columbia team. Manitoba tied the game in the third with a goal by Shelby Bram. After a scoreless overtime period Manitoba once again headed to a shootout where they were able to earn the victory.Long time GDI Prairies Goaltender Abby Ryplanski was able to battle back and recover from her last shootout loss in the placement round to hold on to help her province gain 5th place.

U-18 Girls Win in OT Over Host
As expected, Team Manitoba ran into their toughest competition so far in the 2011 Canada Winter Games. On February 22nd, Team Nova Scotia held two leads in the game but Manitoba was able to tie the game up with a late goal in the third period. After a good chance by Nova Scotia in overtime Meghan Dufault was sprung for a break-away to score the game winner for Manitoba.
GDI trained Abby Ryplanski shut the door in net for Team Manitoba with her second start of the tournament.
Yeasturday, Team Manitoba bulldozed P.E.I with a commanding 9-1 win, leading them into the placement round where they will face Prairie rival Saskatchewan this afternoon. The winner will move on to tomorrows Semi-Final Round.

Team Manitoba U-18 Female Updates
U-18 Team Manitoba takes first two games at the Canada Winter Games.
The girls roll into game three on tuesday against the host team Nova Scotia with a goals for/ goals against ratio of 25-2.

Ryplanski and Lischynski Head for Gold
The Canadian hockey community puts pressure on their nations teams to strive for nothing but the best. Female hockey is no exception.
The U-18 Female Team Manitoba team has this same motive, and the goaltending tandem of Abby Ryplanski and Chantal Lischynski are the two to make it happen.
Both goaltenders have been together for several years playing out of Balmoral Hall on the highshools prep team and also on last years U-18 team. As both goaltenders competed on the National team last year they had a chance to see GDI founder, Ian Clark, in action helping out their idol Roberto Luongo, along with Andrew Raycroft, and Cory Schneider.
Ryplanski and Lishynski head down to Halifax for the Canada Winter Games and hit the ice on February 20th.
Midget Female Twins Claim Tourny Championship in North Dakota
Congratulations to the Female Midget Twins, who won the U-19 Dakota Premier Classic on January 16, 2011 in Brookings, South Dakota. The girls pulled out a 2-0 win over the St. Vital Victorias in the final. The team also posted a 12-1 win over Edina on day 1, and a 6-0 win over host Brookings in the semi-final on Saturday. GDI goaltender Sam Goodbrandson has had another strong start to the year, playing well mid-way through the season.
Female U-18 Summer Eval. Camp Roster
Congrats to the following 4 goaltenders for being selected to the POE U-18 Summer Evaluation Manitoba Camp Roster.
- Sheridan Friesen - Winnipeg
- Abby Ryplanski - Winnipeg
- Marissa Lajeunesse - Mitchell
- Chantal Lischynski - Arnaud
The tournament will take place in Regina, SK and will feature three U-18 provincial teams (Team Alberta, Team Manitoba and Team Saskatchewan) and three CIS teams (University of Alberta, University of Regina and University of Saskatchewan). Following the tournament twenty (20) players will be selected and Team Manitoba will be officially announced in early October 2010.
The 2011 Canada Winter Games - Female Hockey takes place February 19-27 in Halifax, NS, with all hockey games played at the Halifax Metro Centre and the Dartmouth Sportsplex. Team Manitoba is coming off a Silver medal performance at the 2007 Canada Winter Games in Whitehorse, NWT and looks to continue as a legitimate Gold medal contender in U-18 female competition.
Ryplanski Looks Towards Representing Team Canada
GDI Prairies would like to congratulate Abby Ryplanski who was recently selected to the Team Canada 2010-11 National Women's Hockey Team Selection Camp.Hockey Canada announced Wednesday a list of 109 players identified for a strength and conditioning camp that will take place from May 25-30 at the University of Calgary.
The list of 109 players consists of 19 goaltenders, 33 defencemen and 57 forwards, many who have participated in Hockey Canada’s senior women’s, under-22 and under-18 programs.
In the past Abby had played at the 2009/10 U18 Hockey Championships where she had the chance to play in 3 games, combining for a GAA of 1.61. Currently playing on Balmoral Hall's Prep Team she competes in the West JWHL. Abby has trained consistantly with GDI Prairies over the past several years and is a strong student of the game works diligently on and off the ice.

Marion Finds Success In Washington
Manitoba's Dee Ana Marion, goaltender for the POE's Female Midget Tier 1 team, has recently helped her team win the Challenge Cup in Washington, D.C.The Pursuit of Excellence Female team from Kelowna defeated the Little Caesar's from Detroit 6-4 in the championship game of the 26 team tournament. The team's current record stands at 51 wins and 3 loses on the year. Balmoral Hall Blazers from Winnipeg were B-Side Finalists, losing 9-0 to Colorado.
GDI Prairies would like to congratulate Dee Ana on her success in net over this year. Dee Ana has trained through the year with GDI out of the GDI Prairies Satellite Center.
Female Winnipeg Gold Recieves Silver Medal
The Female Winnipeg Gold Hockey Team finished with a silver medal to end out their tournament performance. The Winnipeg Gold team lost to Team Central in a close 2 - 1 final match-up. For full tournament results click here.
GDI Prairies would like to congratulate Team Gold's goaltender, Samantha Goodbrandson, who had a strong outing throughout the tournament with her team. Also, Samantha is currently in the Semi-Final round of the AA Female Midget Playoffs. Sammy, best of luck in your next game on the 13th!
The Female Winnipeg Blue Hockey Team finished in fourth place, losing to Team Eastman in the Bronze Medal match-up.
