Terriers Hold Head Up High

The Portage Terriers capped off their 2011 season as the West representative at the RBC Cup - National Junior Championships.

Jason Kasdorf helped the Terriers to their only win at the RBC Cup. Kasdorf shut down the Eastern representative, and eventual RBC National Champions - the Pembroke Lumbar Kings - with 29 saves, and was awarded with the Player of the Game.

Previous to the tournament, Portage competed against the SJHL champion, the La Ronge Ice Wolves, in a best of seven battle of the ages. The 4-0 win in the seventh game of the Anavet Cup interprovincial junior hockey championship was in front of a crowd of 1,805 in the PCU Arena. Backed by goaltender Jason Kasdorf's 19-save shutout, the Terriers won the best-of-seven series 4-3.

Before the Anavet Cup, Manitoba's Terriers triumphed over the Selkirk Steelers with a 4 games to 1 series win to take the MJHL Turnbull Championship.

Through a long and treacherous season, the Terriers were a strong force within the Canadian Hockey Junior League as they represented Manitoba and the West Region with pride, teamwork, and a relentless commitment to success.

La Ronge Ice Wolves goaltender Myles Hovdebo celebrates as his team captures the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League championship.

GDI Goalies Head to NHL Entry Draft

GDI goaltenders around the globe look to make the next step from junior to pro at the end of June in this years NHL Entry Draft.

Jason Kasdorf from the Portage Terriers was ranked 10th among all the prospects and had previously trained at GDI Prairies Training Center, along with Corbin Boes from the Brandon Wheat Kings who is placed 20th.

GDI trained Jan Obernesser of the AJHL Brooks Bandits was also ranked 22nd.

Terriers MJ Champs - Head to Anavet Cup

For the third time in four seasons, the Portage Terriers are Manitoba Junior Hockey League champions.
Portage wins the best-of-seven MJHL championship series 4-1.
Riding momentum in the series thanks to three straight wins prior to Saturday, the Terriers rode that emotion and the energy of a sold-out crowd right off the bat by scoring two shell shocking goals in the first minute frame. The Terriers scored 18 seconds and then 45 seconds into the game to hold a two goal lead after the first period. Entering the second they potted a third goal just under five minutes in. With a 4-2 lead heading into the third, the game slowly raveled down to the Terriers claiming Manitoba's Junior Championship.
Portage now moves on to the ANAVET Cup, where they’ll face the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League champion. La Ronge leads that best-of-seven series 3-2 over the Yorkton Terriers, with Game 6 scheduled to go Sunday night.

Goaltending Remains a Strong Point for Terriers

In most recent MJHL news Terriers GM, Blake Spiller, discusses several reasons for how the Portage Terriers have matured into a winning organization.
With all their hard work to build a winning team and consistently succeed, the Terriers are grateful for the opportunity to compete in another MJHL final, and are hoping to take home the championship.

“We went through two tough playoff series to get where we are now, and we’re fortunate to be where we are in the finals,” says Spiller, “We’ve had our breaks (in the finals) here and there, but our goaltending has been steady in the regular season and in the playoffs.
We’re happy to be in the finals. We want to put our best foot forward and have some success.”

MMJHL Finals Start Friday

Game one of the MMJHL Championship
Final between the Charleswood Hawks and Fort Garry starts Friday at Eric Coy arena. The opening puck drop is at 7:30pm.

February's MMJHL Goaltender of the Month was awarded to GDI trained goaltender - Dan Cloutier. Through this season Cloutier has collected a statistical high with having his save percentage at .929 and his goals against average at 1.65. Through playoffs, both GDI goaltenders playing with the Charleswood Hawks (Cloutier and Mitch David) have had strong outings, which has amounted into a Championship Final birth. The Hawks went undefeated in the first two rounds playing against the St. Boniface Riels and Seven Oaks Junior Raiders.

Kasdorf Pushes Himself to Perfection: Terriers Up 3-2 in Semi's

By his own admission, Portage Terriers’ netminder Jason Kasdorf wasn’t happy with his outing which resulted in a loss to Dauphin Kings.

With two consecutive wins ─ the most recent a 6-0 victory ─ Kasdorf has rebounded nicely. He’s hoping his A-Game continues Tuesday in Dauphin when the two clubs resume their Sher-Wood Division final which Terriers now lead 3-2.

“Dauphin is a very patient team,” says Kasdorf. “They really don’t waste a lot of shots…they like to take high-quality shots. It’s been a great series against them.”

The second-year Terrier netminder admits that he has enjoyed almost every minute of this year’s playoff run.

“I really like the intensity,” he says with a laugh. “The games have been tight, and excellent hockey for the fans. It’s been fun watching from my viewpoint.

“Yes, it’s intense….but it’s also a lot of fun.”
Kasdorf’s stats have also been impressive thus far. He’s allowed only 18 goals in 490 minutes played, with a 2.20 GAA and .921 save percentage. His record coming into Tuesday’s game is 6-2.

Kasdorf, a graduate of the Winnipeg Thrasher program, will be taking his game to the college level after he leaves junior. He recently committed to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

“At this stage of the season a person can’t look too far ahead,” he says. “Right now you should be focusing on one game at time.”

That game goes Tuesday in Dauphin.

Playoff Experience Invaluable - Steelers Rewucki

A veteran of the MJHL, Selkirk Steelers goaltender Joey Rewucki knows what it’s like to be in the playoffs, and this year that experience is paying off.

The Steelers are in a battle royal against rival Winkler Flyers. Game 6 of this series goes Tuesday night, with the Steelers up 3-2. Rewucki, 19, has been a stalwart in the Steelers’ net.

“Obviously it’s more important and intense because every game can bring you closer to winning the championship,” Rewucki says of his playoff experience,

“It gets a bit easier as you go through it. I haven’t found that it’s much different to prepare for the playoffs compared to the regular season, but in the playoffs I have found that players need to prepare more to take on those games because they are more intense.”

“It can be a bit more pressure because it’s just me in there,” Rewucki says of the goaltender’s role. “So yeah, it can be a lot of pressure…but it’s okay. You get used to it and learn to prepare and perform better each game.

SJHL Playoff Update

The Yorkton Terriers are headed back to the SJHL final. The Terriers became the first team to punch their ticket to the final series Wednesday night when they defeated the Kindersley Klippers 3-2 in Kindersley to win the Sherwood Conference in four straight games.

Yorkton now awaits for the deciding series winner between La Ronge and Melfort, which may be done on Friday night as La Ronge currently has a 3-1 strangle hold on the series.

If La Ronge wins the Bauer final, the Credit Union Cup best of seven final will start at the Mel Hegland Arena. If Melfort comes back to win the series, the Terriers will claim home ice advantage. For more info on the SJHL playoffs Click Here.

GDI Prairies would like to wish past students and summer camp group leaders Devin Peters (Yorkton) and Myles Hovdebo (La Ronge) the best in their playoff run.

Kazzy Named MJHL Player of the Week

Portage Terriers’ Jason Kasdorf has been named this week’s MJHL Player of the Week. The Terriers’ netminder is off to a strong start in the MJHL playoffs, posting two wins after two starts. The 6-foot-4 native of Winnipeg has turned aside 75 of 79 Swan Valley Stampeder shots.
Kasdorf, who was recently named to the MJHL’s second team All-Star squad, has been outstanding all season, reflected in his 24-10 record, 2.53 GAA and .912 save percentage.

The MJHL playoffs are well underway:
  • Portage Terriers hold a 2-1 edge over Swan Valley in their Sher-Wood Division series
  • Waywayseecappo Wolverines, who crossed over from the Sher-Wood Division, are up 2-1 over Winkler Flyers, who finished first in the Addison Division
  • OCN Blizzard and Dauphin Kings are deadlocked with one win apiece as are Selkirk Steelers and Winnipeg Saints

MJHL Playoffs Update - Portage Terriers

Hot off their overtime victory twenty four hours earlier in game one, the Portage Terriers played host to game two on Thursday evening.

After both teams had goals disallowed early on, the Stampeders opened the scoring with just over three minutes remaining in the middle frame to give the visitors the 1-0 lead through forty minutes. The Terriers evened the score at one, nine and a half minutes into the third as Tyler Moore buried the biscuit on the power play. Tanner Harms and Brett Adnum picked up assists on the goal that sent the game to overtime for the second consecutive night.

After a scoreless ten minute overtime period settled nothing, both clubs took a well deserved intermission break. Andrew Wiebe made sure early that the weak of heart would not suffer as the Thunder Bay native snapped home the goal that sent the home town faithful into a frenzy. Mike Gemmell and Jason Kasdorf assisted on the game winner just two minutes into the fifth period.

Kasdorf, for the second night in a row, picked up the victory in net stopping 40 of the 41 shots directed his way. Through the two ten-minute overtime frames Kasdorf was peppered with 13 shots, holding of the Stampeders attack and then assisting on Andrew Wiebe's game-winning goal at the two minute mark.

Both teams will now have three days off before meeting in Swan River for game three next Monday night. Game four will follow that up on Tuesday evening, once again at the home of the Stampeders.

Hawks Look for Playoff Repeat

The Manitoba Major Junior Hockey League has been dominated by the Charleswood Hawks since the league opened in 1970. With a staggering 14 Championships in that span, Charleswood looks to make this year one of the best yet - not to mentioned their third in a row.

Currently the Hawks sit in first place within the MJHL League with a record of 38 - 3 - 2 for 78 points. This is highly credited towards their goaltending, as they top off the league with an untouchable 87 goals against - the next lowest is the Fort Gary Twins who sit 34 goals higher with 121.

The two veteran netminders, Mitch David and Dan Cloutier, are not only of the leagues elite - but also are both two of the leagues most credible and highly respected players.

Mitch previously played his junior career starting in the MJHL with the Winnipeg South Blues before joining the Hawks last year in their Championship run. Mitch was highly involved with instructing at GDI summer camps this past year, working out of River Heights at our regional camp, and out of Southdale for two weeks helping develop young goaltenders within the community.

Cloutier went through his career starting with the St. Vital Junior Victoria's and then was later traded to the Hawks. Dan was awarded the Ron Smith Memorial Trophy at the MMJHL awards last year for the leagues outstanding goaltender. Also noted, is Dan's canning compassion and heart towards raising money for cancer as he recently roller bladed across Canada to raise money.

GDI Prairies Instructor and Charleswood Hawks Goalie Coach Max Desjardins views both goaltenders as the teams backbone, striving from their veteran leadership, and believes that both netminders have the ability to reach new heights after their junior hockey careers.

Jason Kasdorf

Matt Krahn has received an overload of hardware this season along with most recently being credited as the MJHL's top goaltender and 1st Team All-Star. Edie Records Shutout in First Junior Start

The Steinbach Pistons hosted the Waywayseecappo Wolverines on Friday night in Steinbach, and made history with a 3-0 win.

With starting goaltender Addison Herosian not able to play because of sickness, the Pistons called up Brenden Edie from the Eastman Selects.

Edie, who has been playing for the Eastman Selects, stopped all 34 shots for the shutout in his first ever MJHL game. The shutout was also the first for the Pistons franchise since moving to Steinbach last year.

Edie has continually looked to raise his standards of play in net, and with his first junior start it shows his strong character of aiming for nothing but the best. Keep up the hard work!

The Pistons next game takes place this Sunday, February 13th against the OCN Blizzard in Steinbach.

Ice Wolves Look for Cup Repeat

The Credit Union Cup went to northern Saskatchewan last year and there is no reason to think it couldn't stay there. With help from both vetern goaltender Adam Bartko and rookie Myles Hovdebo the Ice Wolves have taken a strangle hold on the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League with minimal goals against at 143 in 46 games - the second lowest in the league. La Ronge currently sits first in the Bauer division, three points up on Melfort. Within the CJHL Current Weekly Rankings - La Ronge is ranked 10th

With the addition of young Myles Hovdebo, La Ronge has been provided with security between the pipes. Myles has a record of 10 wins and 1 loss and a save percentage of .912.

Myles has trained and instructed with GDI Prairies steadily over the past several years. As a goaltender he brings to the table an athletic and highly technical approach towards his position. His passion and dedication in net is second to none. If you have a chance to see him in a game, take note of his strong ice awareness as plays develop - always judging opposing threats.

Below is a past interview with Myles dating back to November 15th from the Ice Wolves Insider.

Krahn Heads to Semi - Finals vs. the U.S

Matt Krahn played key roles in Canada West’s 3-2 win over Sweden Thursday night at the World Junior A Challenge in Penticton. The win moves Canada West to Saturday’s semi-final against arch rival USA.
Krahn, who plays with OCN Blizzard, was steady in the Canadian net facing a total of 33 Swedish shots – 16 of those coming in a very busy second period. Team Canada tightened up in the third and allowed only five shots on goal.
“They came hard at us in the second,” said Krahn. “We saw what they could bring and the guys really tightened it up in the third. We were really hard on the forecheck. I was good to get the win.”
Krahn, who played his midget with Winnipeg Wild, suited up for Team West at the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge. He came home with a bronze medal after TW defeated Team Pacific in the final at London, Ont.
“I knew what to expect from European players,” said Krahn. “They shoot from everywhere….they all seem to do a little toe-drag and fire. That (Under 17s) really helped me here.”
Krahn said the atmosphere has been fantastic at the South Okanagan Events Centre – last night nearly 2,000 took in the game.
“It’s really loud,” said Krahn. “Just about as loud as OCN.”
Meanwhile, Canada West will now focus their game plan on defending against Team USA.
“They’ll come hard at us,” said Krahn. “We played them in an exhibition game….they’re fast. It will be a good game.”

Krahn Helps Team West Get Win Over Russians

Canada West 4 - Russia 2
DOWNING’S THREE POINTS LEAD CANADA WEST TO FIRST WIN
PENTICTON, B.C. – Grayson Downing and Dylan Walchuk scored third-period goals as Canada West earned its first win of the 2010 World Junior A Challenge with a 4-2 victory over Russia on Wednesday night.

Krahn, who hails from Winnipeg, allowed only three goals on 85 shots in 125 minutes of action last week. The 6-foot-1, 19-year-old ‘tender owns a 4-0 record and has been a key figure in the Blizzard’s undefeated streak.

Prime Time for MJHL Players

Showcase Weekend Draws in NHL and NCAA Scouts
You couldn't call it an official poll, but it could certainly be considered a pretty accurate indication as to how Manitoba Junior Hockey League players regard the seventh-annual Old Dutch-MJHL Showcase Weekend which beings tonight at 7 p.m. and will wind up Saturday night.
All four players in attendance at the MJHL press conference, held yesterday to kick off the tournament, were in full agreement. They're aware of the professional and university scouts in the stands, but when the puck drops tonight at 7 p.m. for the game between the Neepawa Natives and Portage Terriers, the last thing on their minds will be the scouts.
All games in the Showcase are also regular-season matchups, so winning is the paramount objective. They can deal with the scouts later.
Selkirk Steelers goalie Joey Rewucki says nothing changes just because they are on display.
"It's the same game on the ice, so you prepare the same way you always do, go out and play, and everything will take care of itself."
Friday's schedule sees the Waywayseecappo Wolverines playing the Steinbach Pistons at 3 p.m., the Dauphin Kings facing the Selkirk Steelers at 4 p.m., the Swan Valley Stampeders taking on Winkler at 5 p.m., the OCN Blizzard versus the Saints at 6 p.m., and the Portage Terriers against the Blues at 7 p.m.
Steinbach and Neepawa open Saturday's schedule at 3 p.m., followed by Selkirk and Swan Valley at 4 p.m., Saints and Wayway at 5 p.m., Winkler and OCN at 6 p.m., while the Blues and Kings wrap it all up at 7 p.m.
Sunday's games at the Iceplex -- Blues vs. Blizzard and Kings vs. Terriers (6:30 p.m.) and Saints vs. Flyers (7:30 p.m.) -- are not part of the Showcase Weekend.

The Kings wrapped up their preliminary schedule tonight when they faced winless Oakville with a 5-4 victory. Dauphins semi-final matchup takes place this upcoming Saturday.

Kings’ netminder Joe Caligiuri leads all goaltenders with a 3.50 GAA, .897 save percentage and 2-0 record

Caligiuri ready for Anavet Cup action

With Dauphin competing against La Ronge this evening, the Kings look to snap a two-year Saskatchewan run at the Anavet Cup, with Humboldt winning the last two. Selkirk Steelers captured the MJHL’s last ANAVET in 2007.

No matter what happens in the ANAVET Cup junior hockey championship when it opens Friday in La Ronge, Sask., Dauphin Kings goaltender Joe Caligiuri is already a winner.
That's because the Manitoba Junior Hockey League's top goaltender will narrowly miss spending his 21st birthday on Monday riding a bus for 10 hours back from La Ronge.
"It's going to be just an ordinary day," said Caligiuri, a Winnipeg native who is in his final year of junior eligibility. The Kings will play Games 1 and 2 in La Ronge against the Ice Wolves on Friday and Saturday. The team will travel on Sunday before resuming the series with Game 3 in Dauphin on Tuesday.
"I'm just happy with where I am right now, we're going to be playing hockey into May. This is definitely the best year I've had playing junior hockey. It's been just an outstanding experience in my last year to play in Dauphin with this group of guys and exciting that we have a chance to go after a national championship."
The Dauphin Kings will host the Royal Bank Cup national junior A championship May 1-9 and the Kings are automatically qualified as the host team.
Caligiuri played the past three seasons in the Western Hockey League with the Brandon Wheat Kings and finished up last year with Prince George Cougars. When the Cougars didn't invite him to camp last fall as an overage player, the Kings made him an offer he couldn't refuse. Mind the twine in one of the best hockey facilities in Manitoba and be guaranteed to compete for a national crown.
A pretty good gig, if you can get it. "We knew he'd be the perfect candidate to be the goaltender and lead us to a championship," said Marlin Murray, Dauphin's head coach.
With Caligiuri between the pipes, the Kings won their first Manitoba Junior Hockey League title in 17 years.
During the regular season, he posted a 2.59 goals against average and 29 wins. Named the playoffs MVP and top goalie, he had an 11-1 record and a 1.70 GAA.
"Joe's leadership has meant a lot to the Dauphin Kings," Murray said. "The biggest thing about Joe is he doesn't get rattled at all. He's cool, he's calm, he sees the puck pretty well. When you have the credentials that he brings to the table, his skill level is outstanding."
Caligiuri's best WHL season was 2007-2008 when he backstopped the Wheat Kings in 54 games and recorded a 30-19-2 record.
The best-of-seven ANAVET Cup interprovincial junior hockey championship usually decides the West region representative in the Royal Bank Cup national junior A hockey championship. But this year, because Dauphin is already in as host, La Ronge is also already in as the region's representative by virtue of being the ANAVET Cup finalist.
"We were expected to be here. One of the hardest things to do in sport, I think, is to win when you are actually supposed to win," Caligiuri said.
The Winnipeg Free Press recently published an excellent article about Kings’ goaltender Joe Caligiuri. Check it out below:

Leclerc Brings Winning Attitude to Saints

During the series against the Blues, “I liked how I approached every game with a fresh mindset,” he says. “I think if I continue to do that we’ll be successful.” This laid-back attitude is something that has allowed Leclerc to focus on his game and keep the Saints in the top spot and move along in the post season.

Cassidy adds that Leclerc’s leadership in net allows the “other guys [to] feel confident when they play in front of him, letting the team focus on the game at hand.
